Night Of The Lanterns

February 12, 2006 / by chintex

Tonight everywhere in China lanterns are being lit and night has been turned into day with all the fireworks. Families everywhere take a walk to show their neighbors that they are united as a family. There walk together is also to bring good health to family. My wife and I will walk later this night with our infant. But tonight we walk with one member of our family not with us. At a later date, I will tell you more about the circumstances behind why.

But there is story even worse on this night of lanterns. In Shanghai lies a father about to die of cancer. His father turned 100 just yesterday. Simon, who has a valid Visa, lives in the United States. He remains in the United States because an immigration officier does not consider it an emergency that a son see a father for the last time. If Simon goes back he can not return to the United States without getting a new Visa which would take 9-12 months. Simon has been in the United States since 1995.

When you take your second to reflect, as we all should do each day, think of Simon and wish him well. I will travel to Shanghai in two days to pray in a temple Simon asked me to go to. I will also pray for the soul of that immigration fellow, that he never know the pain he has caused another human. Terror............... what exactly is it...........

I saw your pictures over on mentalhealthrn's blog. I like the rocky coastline one. Of course, that's similar to my area on the CA coast.

I hadn't heard of this. Can you tell us more? What kind of lanterns do they use? Is there a traditional "look?" do they carry the lanterns along on their walk or leave them in a window or doorway? Do they use candles? Do they leave them burning late into the night? Sorry I'm so full of questions, I'm trying to visualize this - it must look magical!

That's a beautiful celebration, where they walk as a family unit. The mental image is very nice. I think it's tragic that Simon cannot go to see his father for the last time. I can understand how heavy this weighs on their hearts, being the circumstances around this celebratory time of year. That immigration officer shouldn't be in that position. May he never experience the inner turmoil he is putting two other souls through. Do you chance have any pictures of your descriptions above?
